Marcel GUGUIANU
Marcel GUGUIANU was born in Bârlad on June 28, 1922. In 1932 he became a student at the School of Arts and Crafts to learn sculpture. Attending the School of Belle Arte in Bucharest (1941-1945), as audient, he was quickly noticed by his Professor - the sculptor Corneliu Medrea. Since 1948 he participated with works of sculpture in annual and biennial exhibitions in Budapest, Odense, Rome, San Marino, Napoli, Aradjelovač, Belgrad, Montpellier, Paris, Sao Paolo, New York, Ankara, Mali, Washington, Seville, Miami etc.
Looking for his way in art, he realizes that "art is the balance between the brain and heart, a balance determined by asymmetries". After flirting with being a director, conductor, actor and writer, Marcel GUGUIANU realizes that all these do not complete his personality when he put his hands on clay and chisel - understanding to dwell clay, marble and bronze by the end of the end, leaving a trail of light on earth. He said: "the sculpture, like music, there was before the world and before the beings".
Marcel GUGUIANU went boldly to a creative and original way, creating the form that has "light within it", light instead of the hearth, as told in the Bible: at first, it was light; the light separated land and waters and suppressed the chaos. Marcel GUGUIANU sculptures look like candles burning - each "has its flame burning", usually a geometric, parabolic flame, but other times breaking in the wind, or even more delicate, when haunting in the breeze. Looking for the light source, in the shape volume, in calm and frenetic forms - finding and applying technical means to manifest the perfect unity of Dionysian and Apollonian - GUGUIANU opened a new path in culture. "I spiritualize the material from the comfort and I am capable of handling the chisel with the soul. My chisel digs not monuments, but comforts them."
In his sculpture GUGUIANU combines harmony, quiet passion, with frisky playfulness. "My sculpture is an anthem to women." In his works, the Master tells us that all creatures, especially human source of beauty have to emanate light and shine it on the Creator, God (whatever this is the Biblical God, or nature, or society). "The image of the human body, being so harmonious and well balanced by the nature will remain - and in my opinion - the most contested and prized ally of art, despite offensive of the abstract forms."
"We, artists, think about beauty, and by thinking about it, we beautify the world." Marcel GUGUIANU's work is reflected in works of sculpture, statuary, bronze and marble busts of some writers, poets, scientists, actors, located in parks, public gardens, institutions, theaters and museums in cities in Romania and abroad. His masterpieces are exhibited in private collections in Romania, Italy, Canada, former Yugoslavia, Denmark, Nederland, France, Germany, Japan, Greece, USA, South America and so on… The year 1992 is when the Foundation "Marcel GUGUIANU" was created and later, on 2006, Marcel GUGUIANU joins the World Bank, Washington. As a token of appreciation, the World Bank bears as a symbol the sculpture "Skylark" given by the Master himself.
